Brain responses of dyslexic adults to syntactic violations in spoken language: An ERP study

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Chapters 4 and 5 provided experimental data on sensitivity to agreement violations in children with developmental dyslexia. This chapter studies processing of agreement violations and phrase-structure violations in adults with developmental dyslexia. The method of testing is different from that used in the previous chapters. Rather than focussing on the overt linguistic behaviour, the reactions within the brain as a response to syntactic violations will be studied by measuring Event-Related brain Potentials (ERPs). The principle aim of this chapter is to investigate whether the neurophysiological responses to (morpho-)syntactic violations are the same for dyslexic and non-dyslexic subjects.

Native-like Event-related Potentials in Processing the Second Language Syntax: Late Bilinguals

Background: The P600 brain wave reflects syntactic processes in response to different first language (L1) syntactic violations, syntactic repair, structural reanalysis, and specific semantic components. Unlike semantic processing, aspects of the second language (L2) syntactic processing differ from the L1, particularly at lower levels of proficiency. At higher L2 proficiency, syntactic violatio...

Brain systems mediating semantic and syntactic processing in deaf native signers: biological invariance and modality specificity.

Studies of written and spoken language suggest that nonidentical brain networks support semantic and syntactic processing. Event-related brain potential (ERP) studies of spoken and written languages show that semantic anomalies elicit a posterior bilateral N400, whereas syntactic anomalies elicit a left anterior negativity, followed by a broadly distributed late positivity. The present study as...

The role of structural prediction in rapid syntactic analysis.

A number of recent electrophysiological studies of sentence processing have shown that a subclass of syntactic violations elicits very rapid ERP responses, occurring within around 200 ms of the onset of the violation. Such findings raise the question of how it is possible to diagnose violations so quickly. This paper suggests that very rapid diagnosis of errors is possible specifically in situa...

PLATFORM SESSION 2 1. Syntactic ERP Effects in Broca’s Aphasics with Agrammatic Comprehension

Introduction. Although some aphasic patients have been described who are agrammatic in language production but unimpaired in sentence comprehension (e.g., Kolk, Van Grunsven, & Keyser, 1985), the majority of patients with Broca’s aphasia have syntactic problems when comprehending language. This phenomenon of agrammatic comprehension has been intensively studied, mainly by employing paradigms in...

Distinguishing between Different Syntactic Roles of Identical Words in Normal Reading: an ERP Study

Separating between semantic and syntactic aspects of language processing in the brain is a difficult task. In an attempt to distinguish between the two, many studies so far have measured responses to semantic or syntactic violations in reading comprehension tasks. However, this methodology may be inaccurate in describing semantic and syntactic processing during normal reading. In this study, we...
